The Society was founded way back in 1881 to encourage the study
of natural history in the Reading area. Our members come from all
around Reading but the 'district' is a very general area and members
come from as far a field as South Oxfordshire, Maidenhead, Hook
and Thatcham.
We meet for regular walks in and around Reading throughout the
year and, during the winter, for fortnightly indoor meetings where
we have guest speakers and slide shows.
The Society produces an annual publication "The Reading Naturalist"
- this includes reports by the society's recorders on botany, invertebrates,
fungi and vertebrates. Recorders are always keen to receive significant
records from anyone in the Reading area - both members and non-members.
Before starting to keep records please contact us first, as to format
etc.
The Society's members are always pleased to place their knowledge
at the disposal of those beginning to study various aspects of natural
history. Any young enthusiast is encouraged to collect and submit
records for inclusion in the Reading Naturalist. You don't need
to come to our meetings or outings, but to receive a free copy of
the annual publication you need to enrol as a junior member.
Anyone with a particular natural history interest is especially
welcome to join us and share that expertise with interested members.
We are always looking for lively speakers and leaders for our outings
to add to our 'portfolio'. Geology is one area little covered at present. |
